Black Panther’ Star Connie Chiume Dies at Age 72

Connie Chiume, the acclaimed South African actress known for her roles in “Black Panther” and “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” has died at 72. She passed away at Garden City Hospital in Johannesburg on August 6, 2024, according to a statement from her family posted on Instagram.

The family has requested privacy during this time of mourning and stated they will provide further updates as needed.

Chiume’s son, Nongelo Chiume, mentioned that she was admitted for a medical procedure and was recovering well before her unexpected passing.

Chiume’s legacy includes notable roles in South African television dramas such as “Soul City” and “Zone 14,” for which she won South African Film and Television Awards.

Her performance as Zawavari in “Black Panther” and its sequel earned her international recognition.

In addition to her work in the Marvel franchise, Chiume appeared in Beyoncé’s 2020 musical film “Black Is King” and contributed to South African movies and series like “Seriously Single,” “Queen Sono,” and “Gomora.”

The South African government also paid tribute to Chiume, acknowledging her contributions to the arts and expressing condolences to her family. Her four children survive Chiume.
