Former president of PayPal and recent head of Messenger at Meta, David Marcus, has announced his departure from the Democratic Party to endorse former President Donald Trump and the Republican Party.
In a detailed post on X (formerly Twitter), Marcus outlined the reasons behind his dramatic political shift. Marcus described his transformation as a “political 180,” driven by a comprehensive reevaluation of his beliefs.
He attributed this change to an “eye-opening process of disenchantment” and a thorough reexamination of his lifelong convictions.
Marcus recounted an incident from 2017 where he raised $100 million from Silicon Valley for the Democratic National Convention (DNC), only to discover that the DNC planned to allocate only a “single-digit percentage” of the funds for technological purposes.
In his post, Marcus also reflected on a 2019 experience where he testified before Congress on behalf of Meta.
He was disillusioned that Republicans appeared more dedicated to their constituents, while Democrats seemed to prioritize government control.
Marcus criticized the Democratic Party for its handling of several issues, including the Hunter Biden laptop story and President Biden’s cognitive decline, which he believes illustrates a flawed and elitist agenda.
Marcus expressed his frustration with the Democratic Party’s current direction, accusing it of sidelining moderates and adopting an increasingly leftist ideology.
He also criticized the mainstream media for its role in perpetuating what he views as a misleading narrative aligned with the Democratic agenda.
Specifically, Marcus criticized the Biden administration’s approach to Iran, arguing that easing Trump-era sanctions has allowed the Iranian regime to fund terrorism and pursue anti-American and anti-Israeli policies.
In supporting Trump, Marcus aligned with the former president’s positions on technology, particularly regarding cryptocurrency and artificial intelligence, as well as foreign policy issues. He emphasized that Trump’s policies on these fronts are more in line with his views than those of the current administration.
Marcus concluded his announcement by referencing the recent assassination attempt on Trump during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on July 13. He praised Trump’s bravery in the face of the attack, viewing it as a testament to the former president’s resilience and American spirit.
The tech entrepreneur’s endorsement of Trump and his switch to the Republican Party have been met with notable responses, including from fellow tech entrepreneur Joe Lonsdale, who commended Marcus for his “intellectual courage.” Marcus’s decision significantly shifts his political alignment as he supports a Republican administration for the 2025 election.
