Kamala Harris’ Top VP Contenders: Shapiro vs. Kelly — Who Might She Pick?

As Kamala Harris, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, prepares for the 2024 election, two key contenders have emerged for the vice-presidential slot: Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro and Arizona Senator Mark Kelly.

Shapiro, 51, and Kelly, 60, are pivotal figures from crucial swing states that Democrats aim to secure in November.

“Shapiro is a top contender,” noted one insider familiar with the ongoing discussions. “Securing Pennsylvania could dramatically shift the dynamics of the race.” However, another Democratic figure on Capitol Hill cautioned that discussions are still “fluid.”

Pennsylvania, a state that swung to Republican Donald Trump in 2016, is seen as a critical battleground. Meanwhile, supporters argue that Arizona, which President Biden and Harris won in 2020, could remain in the Democratic column with Kelly as Harris’s running mate.

Kelly brings several advantages to the table. “He’s an astronaut, a safe choice, and has a compelling personal story with his wife Gabby Giffords, who survived a tragic shooting,” said a Democratic congressman. Meghan McCain, daughter of the late Republican Senator John McCain, also endorsed Kelly, praising his military and NASA background as vital assets that could challenge Republicans.

However, both candidates face criticism. Shapiro has been criticized by pro-Hamas activists for his staunch support of Israel and his handling of campus protests, with some progressives urging Harris to avoid selecting him. Additionally, Shapiro has faced accusations of not addressing a sexual misconduct complaint swiftly enough.

Kelly’s tenure as an Arizona senator is seen as a strategic asset. Still, insiders suggest Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer might be hesitant to lose such a dependable member of the chamber. Schumer’s office declined to comment on the matter.

Two other potential candidates, North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper and Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, are also being considered. While their states are not as crucial as Pennsylvania or Arizona, both have experience appealing to moderate voters. Cooper has won six statewide elections in North Carolina, while Beshear could counter Republican vice-presidential nominee Sen. J.D. Vance’s appeal in Appalachia.
