Former President Donald Trump quickly seized President Biden’s significant verbal slip during a highly anticipated press conference on Thursday, where Biden mistakenly referred to his 2024 opponent, Trump, as his vice president.

Biden, 81, made the gaffe less than 10 minutes into his briefing while answering the first question of the evening about Vice President Kamala Harris’ electoral prospects against the 78-year-old former president.

“Look, I wouldn’t have picked Vice President Trump to be vice president if I think she’s not qualified to be president,” Biden said at the event organized by the White House to address mounting concerns about his mental fitness for office.

Within minutes of Biden’s error, Trump took to social media. “Crooked Joe begins his ‘Big Boy’ Press Conference with, ‘I wouldn’t have picked Vice President Trump to be vice president, though I think she was not qualified to be president.’ Great job, Joe!” Trump wrote on Truth Social, mocking Biden’s mistake.

The Biden campaign responded on X (formerly Twitter) with a tweet from the presumptive Democratic nominee’s account during the press conference: “By the way: Yes, I know the difference. One’s a prosecutor, and the other’s a felon.”

Trump highlighted other instances of Biden stumbling over words and stuttering during the briefing by posting clips of the event on Truth Social. The press conference did little to alleviate Democratic concerns about Biden’s ability to defeat Trump in the upcoming election. Shortly after the briefing, Rep. Jim Himes (D-Conn.) announced that he hopes Biden will “step aside from the presidential campaign,” making him the 16th congressional Democrat to call for Biden to end his re-election bid since his poor performance in the June 27 debate against Trump.
