Rahman, in an attempt to cover his tracks, strangled 24-year-old Suma Begum and then placed her body in a suitcase that he threw into the River Lea, a tributary of the Thames. A mudlark discovered the briefcase containing Suma’s remains ten days later.

During the trial, the court heard distressing details of Suma’s murder. Her boyfriend, Shahin Miah, who was in the United Arab Emirates at the time, managed to record the events leading to her death and handed the recordings to the police. In court, Mr. Miah tearfully described how Rahman threatened Suma’s life during a video call moments before the fatal attack.

In one of the recorded calls, Rahman confessed to Mr. Miah that he had killed Suma and showed him her lifeless state. Mr Miah recounted seeing Suma with frothing at her mouth and Rahman swearing at him.
