Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State died on December 27, 2023, at the age of 67, after battling prostate cancer and leukaemia in a German hospital.
A Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and former president of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Akeredolu secured re-election in October 2020 and began his second term in February 2021. However, his tenure faced challenges following a medical leave overseas in June.
Returning to Nigeria in September 2023, Akeredolu governed from Ibadan, Oyo State, sparking public outrage. On December 13, 2023, he went on another medical leave, transferring power to his deputy, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, who assumed the role of acting governor.
Amid Akeredolu’s illness, his wife, Betty, postponed celebrations for her 70th birthday. The governor’s passing leaves Ondo State seeking new leadership through a by-election, while Aiyedatiwa continues as acting governor until a successor is elected.
