Garda Assistant Commissioner Angela Willis has reported a decline in anti-immigrant protests in Dublin. However, she highlighted a concerning trend of increased aggression at demonstrations.

Speaking at Monday’s Joint Policing Committee meeting, Assistant Commissioner Willis, who oversees policing in Dublin city, noted that there have been 291 protests in 2024, with 75 of them being anti-immigration demonstrations.

This marks a significant decrease compared to the first six weeks of 2023, which saw 73 anti-immigration protests alone.

Councillor for Dublin North Inner City, Ray McAdam, emphasized that the rise in aggression is not limited to anti-immigration protests but is evident across various issues.

“It doesn’t necessarily have to be concerning anti-immigration protests, but just in general, the level of aggression is when people have strongly held views on any issue,” he stated in an interview with Newstalk.
