Anya Taylor-Joy, known for her roles in films such as “The Witch,” “Split,” and “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” has disclosed that she had to fight multiple directors to transform her characters’ crying scenes into more intense expressions of emotion.
The 28-year-old actress shared her experiences in recent interviews, revealing that despite her successful career, she has faced significant challenges on set.

Taylor-Joy first gained recognition in Robert Eggers’ 2015 horror film “The Witch.” In a British GQ interview, she recounted arguing with Eggers about a scene where her character, Thomasin, would sob while dragged through a farmyard. “Eventually, I said, ‘She’s angry; she’s f*****g p***ed. She’s been blamed repeatedly, and she’s not doing anything. We have to stop with the crying,'” she explained.
Her assertiveness continued with George Miller, director of “Furiosa,” where she fought for three months to include a screaming scene. In an interview with The New York Times, Taylor-Joy expressed her advocacy for female rage, stating, “We’re animals, and there’s a point where somebody just snaps.” She praised Miller but emphasized the importance of portraying raw, powerful emotions on screen.
This determination has earned Taylor-Joy a reputation for swapping crying scenes for more intense emotional outbursts. She clarified that while she is not promoting violence, she advocates for women to be seen as real people with complex reactions. “We have reactions that are not always dainty or un-messy,” she told British GQ.
Filming “Furiosa” was particularly challenging for Taylor-Joy. She described her time on set as a difficult period, mentioning she felt “never more alone” during the production. When asked to elaborate, she declined, saying, “Next question, sorry. Talk to me in 20 years.” However, she had high praise for her co-star Chris Hemsworth, calling him “the most wonderful, kind-hearted, big-hearted individual.”
Taylor-Joy’s rise to fame began in her late teens with roles in “Endeavour” and “The Witch.” She gained significant attention in 2016’s “Split,” a role she discussed in an interview with W-Magazine. Reflecting on her journey, Taylor-Joy shared how harsh comments about her appearance affected her, recalling a particularly upsetting incident on Facebook that led her to avoid mirrors for a long time.
Despite these challenges, Taylor-Joy has embraced her unique features and has grown into her appearance. She humorously mentioned her struggle with sports as a child due to the placement of her eyes but noted that she has since grown more comfortable with herself.
Her career has continued to soar with roles in Emma, The Queen’s Gambit, The Menu, and, most recently, Furiosa. Taylor-Joy’s dedication to her craft and insistence on portraying genuine emotions have solidified her status as a prominent figure in Hollywood, earning her a devoted fan base and critical acclaim.
