Concerns Mount Over Surging Asylum Applications in Ireland
Concern was reportedly expressed at the Fianna Fáil parliamentary party meeting tonight during a lengthy discussion on migration.
TDs and Senators were warned that there could be 26,000 to 30,000 asylum applications this year.
According to reports, Finance Minister Michael McGrath stated during the private meeting at Leinster House that the problem had “exploded” and that the Government’s management of the issue needed improvement.
It is understood that several speakers raised concerns about the Government’s communication strategy.
Other Ministers at the meeting included Housing Minister Darragh O’Brien and Health Minister Stephen Donnelly.
The party leader, Tánaiste Micheál Martin, attended the conference and canvacanvassedropean Parliament elections.
Deputy James O’Connor reportedly expressed concerns about the lack of support provided to communities and towns that have accepted large numbers of migrants.
Minister McGrath highlighted that migration had become a significant political issue during the meeting.
He informed the party’s TDs, Senators, and MEPs that public concern regarding the issue had become mainstream and that improvements were necessary at the Government level.
It is believed that the Minister identified two areas for improvement: communication with the public and the management of the actual system.
He estimated the number of asylum seekers entering Ireland this year to be between 25,000 and 30,000, citing the recent arrival of 600 applicants in a single week.
