Royal expert Tom Quinn claims that Prince Harry was reduced to tears when he learned that King Charles had made Prince William colonel-in-chief of the Army Air Corps.
Announcing the news on the day of Harry’s return to London for the 10th anniversary of the Invictus Games seemed designed to cause maximum pain despite his service with the unit in Afghanistan.
Quinn described the announcement as a “real kick in the teeth” for Harry, who has often felt marginalized within the royal family. He suggested that the timing of the announcement, deliberately made while Harry was in the UK, was meant to convey that he was no longer welcome.
According to Quinn, the decision reflects a larger message to Harry: betraying the family has consequences beyond escaping royal duties. It also means losing cherished roles and connections.
Both William and Harry are trained military pilots. Still, while Harry served in active conflict with the Army Air Corps until 2014, William’s military service was in search and rescue and air ambulance roles.
Harry’s expected reunion with King Charles during his UK visit did not materialize, raising questions about whether William’s new appointment played a role in the decision.
Since stepping down as a senior royal in 2020, Harry has been estranged from his father, brother, and sister-in-law, Kate Middleton. Despite once being close, Harry did not see Kate during his recent visit to the UK, where she is reportedly battling cancer.
Currently residing in Montecito, California, with his wife Meghan Markle and their two children, Harry’s ties to his old life as a royal are gradually diminishing.
