A mother is accused of assaulting her young daughter on a Delta Air Lines flight from Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, to Seattle.
Breanna Mistler, 33, allegedly kicked and shook her child after the toddler woke up during the flight, according to federal court documents obtained by FOX 10.
Witnesses reported Mistler shouting profanities at her daughter, prompting other passengers to intervene to protect the child. Despite their efforts, Mistler allegedly continued the abuse, telling passengers to mind their own business.
Mistler was seated in an aisle seat while her daughter was in a window seat. The child woke Mistler, who then allegedly kicked and shook her daughter “like a rag doll,” according to the US Attorney’s Office in the Western District of Washington.
Customs and Border Protection officers arrested Mistler upon the plane’s landing on May 1. Her daughter was found to have several bruises.
Prosecutors described the case as shocking, noting that this was the second time in six months Mistler was charged with endangering her child. In December, she allegedly took her daughter with her as she burglarized her mother’s home and slashed tyres on her vehicle.
Mistler’s daughter was placed in the care of Child Protective Services and later brought to a relative. Mistler, from Sacramento, California, has been charged with misdemeanour assault.
A judge ordered Mistler to be held at a federal detention centre at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport due to the seriousness of the assaults committed in front of numerous witnesses during a lengthy plane trip. Her preliminary examination is scheduled for May 16.
