A trial is underway where a teacher is accused of grooming one of her students with a shopping trip to Gucci before engaging in sexual activity with him.
The defendant, Rebecca Joynes, aged 30, faces six counts of inappropriate activity with a child. She allegedly met the teenagers while working as a teacher at a school in Greater Manchester.
Joynes is said to have groomed her first alleged victim, referred to as Boy A, by buying him a £345 belt from Gucci. Following this shopping trip, she reportedly took the 15-year-old to her home in Salford, where they engaged in improper activity on two occasions, according to details presented at Manchester Crown Court.
The teacher was suspended from her position, and during this period, she is alleged to have become pregnant by another teenage boy, Boy B, whom she also met while teaching. Joynes denied any sexual activity and was released on bail with conditions preventing unsupervised contact with anyone under 18.
During the trial’s opening, prosecutor Joe Allman shared Boy B’s account, stating that they were in contact while Joynes was suspended, and their inappropriate relationship began when Boy B turned 16. Joynes allegedly misled Boy B about her ability to conceive due to polycystic ovary syndrome, a claim disproven when she became pregnant with his child while on bail.
Boy A told police that Joynes shared most of her phone number’s digits and encouraged him to guess the remaining digit, initially thinking it was a joke when she invited him to her flat.
Joynes picked up Boy A in her car and made several stops before the alleged inappropriate activity occurred at her flat. Similarly, Boy B stated that he was aware of Joynes’ suspension when they engaged in improper activity at her residence.
Joynes faces charges, including inappropriate activity with Boys A and B, while in a position of trust. The trial continues at Manchester Crown Court and is expected to last two weeks.
