An LGBTQ+ Inclusive Easter Vigil Takes an Unexpected Turn as Bishop Removes Female Reverend’s Collar During Eucharistic Prayer”
An Easter vigil aimed at inclusivity faced disruption when Bishop Alan M. Gates removed the clerical collar from Reverend Tamara Tucker’s neck during the Great Vigil of Easter at The Cathedral Church of St. Paul in Boston.

The incident, caught on camera, occurred as Tucker momentarily faltered while instructing the congregation on communion protocol. Tucker, a priest and lead organizer of The Crossing, an inclusive worship community, drew laughter from the audience, including Bishop Gates, as she navigated through the momentary lapse.
However, Gates’ attempt at humour turned controversial when he approached Tucker and removed her collar without a word before quickly returning it, claiming it was a joke.
While some found the incident amusing, others criticized Gates for perpetuating misogyny within the church, highlighting the more profound issues present in Christianity’s history.

Rev. Rita Powell, who attended the service, expressed disappointment, stating that the incident overshadowed what should have been a joyous occasion.
Acknowledging the misstep, a spokesperson for the Episcopal Diocese of Massachusetts stated that Gates’ actions were ill-considered and apologized on his behalf.

Two weeks after the vigil, Gates issued a statement expressing remorse for his actions, describing them as “misguided mischief” and acknowledging the harm caused to Tucker and her worship community.
Despite the apology, Tucker declined to comment on the incident, indicating she was not ready to address it.
The incident sparked discussions about the boundaries of humour and respect within religious settings, particularly during sacred ceremonies. Some questioned whether Gates’ actions were appropriate, given the occasion’s solemnity and the reverence traditionally associated with the clergy’s attire.

Additionally, the incident shed light on ongoing challenges faced by marginalized communities within religious institutions, particularly the LGBTQ+ community.
Tucker’s role as a prominent figure within an inclusive worship community underscored the importance of creating safe and welcoming spaces for all individuals, regardless of gender or sexual orientation.
Moving forward, the incident prompted calls for greater sensitivity and awareness regarding issues of misogyny and discrimination within the church.
It served as a reminder of the ongoing work needed to foster inclusivity and respect for all faith community members, regardless of their background or appearance.
