Prosecutors have accused former US President Donald Trump of engaging in election fraud by allegedly paying hush money to an Adult star just days before the 2016 White House vote.
Assistant District Attorney Matthew Colangelo emphasized the gravity of the case, describing it as a “criminal conspiracy and a cover-up” orchestrated by Trump to influence the presidential election.
Colangelo outlined the prosecution’s argument, claiming that Trump manipulated business records to secure the silence of Stormy Daniels regarding a 2006 l encounter that could have impacted his presidential campaign. He asserted that this constituted apparent election fraud on Trump’s part.
During the trial, Trump, now 77 years old, appeared in court wearing a dark blue suit and American flag pin, accompanied by his legal team. His demeanour remained composed as the prosecutor presented the opening remarks.
The trial’s timing is significant, occurring just months before Trump’s scheduled rematch with Democratic President Joe Biden in the upcoming election. Expected witnesses for the prosecution include Stormy Daniels and Trump’s former associate, Michael Cohen, who allegedly facilitated the payment to Daniels.
Trump’s defence team, led by attorney Todd Blanche, vehemently denies any wrongdoing by the former president. Blanche argued that attempting to influence an election is a legitimate part of democracy and that Trump’s actions were within legal bounds.
The trial’s first witness was David Pecker, former publisher of the National Enquirer, who prosecutors allege was involved in burying negative stories about Trump through a practice known as “catch and kill.” The trial proceedings were adjourned for the day after Pecker’s brief testimony.
Trump, addressing reporters after the court session, reiterated his innocence and accused the case of being politically motivated to hinder his 2024 White House bid.
The trial schedule requires Trump’s presence in court four days a week for an estimated six-to-eight-week period. He faces multiple counts related to falsifying business records for reimbursing Cohen for the $130,000 hush money payment to Daniels.
Blanche questioned the credibility of Cohen and Daniels, highlighting Cohen’s criminal convictions and suggesting Daniels pursued financial gain through her involvement in the case.
Separately, Trump faces charges related to attempts to overturn the 2020 election results and withholding secret documents post-presidency, leading to repeated trial delays.
The trial’s judge, Juan Merchan, maintains a strict schedule, overseeing the proceedings and imposing a partial gag order on Trump to prevent public attacks on trial participants.
Security measures have been heightened during the trial following a recent unrelated incident outside the courthouse involving self-harm by an individual. The jurors’ identities remain confidential for their safety, with Merchan overseeing the trial’s conduct and potential contempt of court actions.
