A 31-year-old Chinese tourist named Huang Lihong fell 250 feet into the Ijen Crater while taking a photo and died tragically.
Huang lost her balance and slipped over the crater’s edge while her husband, Zhang Yong, captured the moment.
Accompanied by a local guide, the couple ascended the slope to witness the sunrise from the volcano’s rim.
Unfortunately, during the photo shoot, Huang stumbled, leading to her fatal fall into the crater.
Rescuers faced a daunting task, taking over two hours to retrieve Huang’s body from the depths of the volcano.

Dwi Putro Sugiarto, the head of the Department of Conservation for the Banyuwangi region, emphasized that the incident was an accident and highlighted the importance of safety measures for tourists visiting Mount Ijen.
Following the tragedy, arrangements are being made to transport Huang’s body to Bali before repatriating it to China. Mount Ijen, known for its blue fire caused by Sulphuric gas emissions, is part of a volcanic group located on the border between Banyuwangi and Bondowoso in East Java.
This incident comes amidst heightened volcanic activity in Indonesia, with the recent eruption of Mount Ruang prompting over 2,100 people to evacuate Sulawesi Island.
Concerns over falling rocks, volcanic clouds, and the tsunami risk led officials to relocate residents from Tagulandang island to Manado, six hours away by boat.
The Ijen Crater offers stunning views of nearby mountains and is a popular tourist destination.
However, visitors are reminded to exercise caution and adhere to safety guidelines while exploring the area.
Photography enthusiasts often flock to the crater to capture its picturesque landscapes and unique natural phenomena. However, tragedies like Huang’s fall serve as sobering reminders of the inherent dangers associated with such activities.
Local authorities and tour operators are urged to prioritize visitor safety and implement measures to prevent similar accidents in the future. Education and awareness campaigns may help raise awareness about the risks of volcanic terrain and encourage responsible behaviour among tourists.
The allure of natural wonders like Mount Ijen attracts adventurers worldwide, but it’s essential to balance exploration with caution. By promoting safe practices and providing adequate guidance, authorities can help ensure visitors’ positive and secure experience.
As Huang’s family mourns her tragic loss, the incident serves as a sad reminder of the fragility of life and the unpredictable forces of nature. May her memory serve as a testament to the need for vigilance and preparedness in the face of natural hazards.
