A Qatar Airways flight from Doha to Dublin encountered severe turbulence, injuring 12 people on board.
Six passengers and six crew members were affected by the turbulence. Despite the incident, the flight landed safely at Dublin Airport shortly before 1 p.m.
Upon landing, the aircraft was met by emergency services, including airport police and the fire service.
A spokesperson for Dublin Airport stated, “Qatar Airways flight QR107 from Doha landed safely as scheduled at Dublin Airport shortly before 13.00 on Sunday. Upon landing, the aircraft was met by emergency services because six passengers and six crew members on board reported injuries after experiencing turbulence over Turkey.”
The airport team provided complete assistance to passengers and airline staff.
This incident follows the recent death of 73-year-old Geoffrey Kitchen, who suffered a heart attack during severe turbulence on a Singapore Airlines flight from London to Singapore. The plane plunged 7,000 feet in six minutes, and Kitchen’s wife remains hospitalized.
According to the National Weather Service, turbulence is the “irregular air motion resulting from eddies and vertical currents.” While most turbulence is light, causing minor bumps, around 65,000 flights experience moderate turbulence annually, with about 5,500 encountering severe turbulence, according to the National Centre for Atmospheric Research.
